World's Largest Suspension Bridge Planned in Italy

The controversial plan to build the world's longest suspension bridge are moving forward, connecting Calabria and Sicily across the Strait of Messina. It will span around 2.5 miles and cost in the neighborhood of $6 billion.

i'm pretty stunned the italians are going through with this. seems like a huge investment for something that won't get much use. Berlusconi's bridge to nowhere, perhaps?

don't get me wrong, sicily needs tourism, but they are already serviced fairly well between the autostrade via ferries (even trains get ferried) and airports.

i can think of several things the italians would be better off spending 7.5 billion dollars/6 billion euros on.

for starters, the rampant poverty and corruption that plagues many points south of roma...

this is a wonderful project. a lot of people will benefit from this bridge.
